I recently had the opportunity to give my small apartment bathroom a makeover. So now I’m sharing tips that helped me decorate given what I was working with. Here are five tips for a small bathroom makeover. Keep reading to see how I went from this:
to this:
Small Bathroom Makeover Tip 1: Choose furniture that matches the built-in features of your bathroom
After browsing Pinterest, I considered getting this shelf from Ikea. I ultimately decided against it because it was a birch finish which not only would have been difficult to match with other pieces of furniture, but also would have probably clashed with my wooden door. I opted for this shelf from Ikea instead, which matched perfectly not only with my door but also with this shorter Bamboo shelf I picked up from Marshall’s.
Small Bathroom Makeover Tip 2: Use baskets to store items on shelves for a less cluttered look
Instead of laying all your bathroom essentials out on a storage shelf, put them in baskets or storage containers for a more organized look. I chose these baskets after closely reading and comparing their dimensions to make sure they would fit on my shelf. Similarly, I placed my feminine products in two ceramic jars positioned in the middle of my shorter shelf. You can spot the containers below.
Small Bathroom Makeover Tip 3: Plants, plants, and more plants
A little greenery never hurt anybody. If anything it helps. I have neither the time nor the patience to deal with real living plants, but my local Marshall’s has an excellent selection of faux plants. Just look!
Small Bathroom Makeover Tip 4:Pick a pair of colors for a bathroom color scheme
Besides the bamboo finish of my furniture, I chose black and white to tie pieces of my bathroom together. I ultimately went with this color because I saw a bathroom accessories set at TJ Maxx that I was absolutely obsessed with. For that reason, I decided that my rugs and shower curtains would follow suit and be black and white as well, albeit different prints and patterns.
Small Bathroom Makeover Tip 5: Cover up built-in soap trays and toothbrush holders with trays and place mouthwash in a glass bottle
The big things are just as important as the little details. For that reason, I just knew that I had to find a way to cover up the built-in soap and toothbrush holders. This storage box set I got from Ikea matched perfectly with my storage shelves and also came with two trays that balanced perfectly over the holders. A true dream come true for concealing such an eyesore! Likewise, mouthwash can come in big bulky bottles, so consider pouring them into glass bottles for a sleek look. Olive oil dispensers work great because they have spouts that make it easier to pour into your mouth instead of wasting paper cups. Eco-friendly anyone?
