It’s always been the perfect time to support Black owned beauty businesses. Many dark skin makeup wearers, including myself, had no choice but to support these brands because they were often the only ones making products that worked for our complexion. I’ve put together a list of my holy grail Black owned makeup products. What I mean by that is, these products are my all time favorites — the ones I use for practically every makeup look — that also happen to be from Black owned companies.
If you’re hearing about a lot of these Black owned makeup brands for the first time, it can be overwhelming to decide what products you should try first. The products on this list of my holy grail Black owned makeup products also double as my starting point recommendation from these brands.
Beauty Bakerie Flour Setting Powder
This is hands down my favorite product from Beauty Bakerie and favorite setting powder altogether. The powder is noticeably fine, much finer than other powders in my collection, and trust me I have plenty. It’s the perfect balance of being lightweight but controlling oil and setting makeup in place. I’ve essentially run out of my setting powder in the shade yellow, which is how you KNOW it’s that good. (How often do you run out of setting powder anyway?)
Prime Beauty Brownzer
This bronzer from Prime Beauty is the first bronzer that worked well on my skin tone. It is so smooth and so pigmented, but most importantly it is the perfect shade for a bronzer. Many bronzers that I had tried before this one were either too ashy and cool (more like a contour), or too shimmery ( a glorified blush/highlighter). I’m happy that Prime Beauty got it right with this one because I reach for it every time (unless I reach for the next item on this list).
Fenty Beauty Sun Stalk’r Bronzer
This is another bronzer favorite of mine. If I don’t have on the Prime Beauty bronzer, I probably have this one on. (Though I admit that I may be using more of Mented Cosmetics recently launched bronzer.) When this initially launched, I filmed a swatch test and comparison of this Fenty Bronzer to the Prime Beauty one. You can check it out here. The noticeably warm red undertone is what I love the most about this Fenty bronzer. Unfortunately, my shade, “Mocha Mami”, is the deepest shade, so I definitely think Prime Beauty has Fenty Beauty beat when it comes to deep bronzers.
Mented Cosmetics Stick Foundation
There is a reason this foundation is called “Skin by Mented.” This foundation legitimately will melt into your skin. Mented managed to create shades that match my skin perfectly, and a formula that is lightweight with packaging convenient for traveling or packing on the go. You can see the foundation in action on me here:

Juvia’s Place Saharan II Palette
I can admit, this palette does not present the most intuitive combination of colors. Still, the shades are richly pigmented, a trait that Juvia’s Place palettes are especially known for. The shades “Fez” and “Taza” are my usual go to shades for transitions and “Zohra” is the perfect shade to add depth to my pink, red, and berry eyeshadow looks, which I do VERY often. Because I gravitate more towards matte eyeshadow looks, I usually use the metallic shades in the palette as inner corner highlights. Here’s an example of how I used the palette:
