The Best Post-Grad Decision I Made

I pretty much wanted to live in any city other than New York after college. That’s not because I hated my hometown–I’m a ride or die New Yorker for life. I just knew that by going back home to New York, I’d probably move back home home. As much as I tried to avoid it, I ended up back home in Queens and looking back, it’s the best post-grad decision I made.

If It Ain’t About The Money

Obviously, moving out and living on your own comes with a lot of costs. From rent to groceries, wifi, furniture, the list goes on–I literally do not have to worry about a single one of these expenses. Literally nothing. Of course I’m blessed with a mom who didn’t ask me to chip in for rent (and a financial situation that didn’t require me to do so either). But I’ve been able to save and travel much more without having to deal with the typical adulting expenses. In this day and age, especially as a New Yorker, it is incredibly hard to save. Moving back home for a bit allowed me to build a cushion financially to at least jump start my saving habits sooner rather than later.

Health is Wealth

This is probably the healthiest I’ve felt in my entire life solely due to the fact that I moved back home. My whole entire family cares deeply about fitness and physical health. Basically the reason I go to the gym so much is because I was pressured into doing it by my family. Don’t get me wrong, no one forced me to go to the gym. But when everyone else around you is living a healthy lifestyle, you start thinking you can and should do the same. Basically my family served my  accountability partner which I’ve mentioned is a key reason I’ve been able to stick to my fitness goals. Obviously this varies from person to person, but moving back home can help you get into a solid routine that others immediately around you can hold you accountable for.

And of course you’re literally reading one of the best things that happened as a result of me moving back home: this blog! Check out my first blog post if you want the full story on how this blog came to be. Overall I’ve been able to pursue ideas and visions that I know for a fact I wouldn’t have if I were living anywhere else but home.

Final Thoughts

When my move back home became official, I was initially discouraged at the prospect of not having a place to call my own like most of my friends did. The lesson learned here is to trust the process. This is definitely purpose in this path I chose to take. Moving back home allowed me to travel more, stay fit, and start this blog! Overall I truly think it provided the consistency in my life that I needed to get back on track, especially when it comes to my spirituality and relationship with God (that could be a whole other post on its own!) I guess you can say I’m living best life! Obviously, not everyone can move back home either because of geographical reasons or maybe home life isn’t a healthy environment. But if you’re in a position like me where you’re moving back home right after college, don’t be discouraged. Everything is working together for good!
