Top 5 Series: Best Setting Powders for Women of Color

Hey loves! I’m back with another, and probably my last, post of my top 5 series. I’ve covered foundations, concealers, and contours. That only leaves one product left to discuss. In order to make sure your makeup look is going to last all day and night, you need the perfect …SETTING POWDER! Setting powders are near and dear to my heart because I love a long lasting, matte makeup look. It’s also important to me because I feel like it’s been a recent trend for beauty companies to make setting powders that cater to deeper skin tones. More shade variety means more setting powders in my collection! Here are some of my favorites:

Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Setting Powder

Pro Tip: sometimes I’ll use the Jackie Aina trick of setting my face with a powder after I’ve primed but before I apply foundation.

This one is my all time favorite. I never knew what loyalty was until I added this setting powder to my collection. Obviously I’m exaggerating but you get the point. I initially got this setting powder in the translucent universal shade and used as an under eye setting powder. Once they expanded the shade to include a deep version, that become my go to face setting powder. Pro Tip: sometimes I’ll use the Jackie Aina trick of setting my face with a powder after I’ve primed but before I apply foundation. I’ve truly noticed a difference in my makeup when I do this. Others must notice too because I receive a top of compliments when I do this! This Laura Mercier setting powder has the perfect undertones for me as it is not too warm to the point where it looks red, but it’s also not gray and ashy. Just the perfect balance to give me the matte and long lasting look I need!

Beauty Bakerie Flour Powder

When we start talking about under eye setting powder though, Beauty Bakerie’s Flour Powder might have just taken the cake!

I know I just mentioned that Laura Mercier has my favorite setting powder but that was for face. When we start talking about under eye setting powder though, Beauty Bakerie’s Flour Powder might have just taken the cake (no pun intended!–ok it was slightly intended but that was a good one wasn’t it?) At first the setting powder seemed unassuming and nothing about it blew me away. But the more I gave it a chance, the more I noticed the subtle differences in my makeup. Because I have it in the yellow shade, it blends seamlessly into my under eye concealer which is typically a yellowish shade as well. The powder is so fine milled and soft, it truly feels like flour. I love this setting powder so much, I’ll probably get the deeper shade, at least that’s if it’s ever not out of stock!

Maybelline Fit Me Loose Finishing Powder

Let’s give it up for the drugstore brands that finally get their act together and expand the shade ranges of all their products! I really never imagined having a favorite setting powder from a drugstore brand but Maybelline came in clutch! I already loved the foundation from the Fit Me line and the setting powder did not disappoint. Honestly it reminds me of the Laura Mercier Powder so it could definitely be a dupe. There’s not much else to say other than it’s affordable, great quality, and it works! It’s $8 honey, what do you have to lose?

Too Faced Born This Way Ethereal Setting Powder

This setting powder works for me and it’s pretty comparable to the Laura Mercier setting powder as well. The only point I will bring up is that it’s definitely more on the red side, at least the deep shade. Because of that I’ll only use this powder if my foundation is a little too cool to my complexion. I’ll use this setting powder as a way to add warmth and offset any shade match issues I may have with my foundation. The translucent powder works well under eye or for any other areas of the face that you’d like to highlight.

ColourPop No Filter Sheer Matte Pressed Powder

Even if you never leave the house without setting powder, you’ve got to have an on-the-go option just in case. I love this option because it’s compact and truly a sheer powder. I demoed this powder in a summertime haul video where I used the ColourPop foundation. The foundation left me SUPER oily after a short amount of time but the powder definitely came to the rescue. It’s ColourPop, so the product gets a bonus for affordability as well.

Final Thoughts

All setting powders aren’t created equal! There are definitely some setting powders in my collection that didn’t make this list because they are either too ashy for my skin tone or leave a chalky look on my face. As always, the best thing to do is try out samples from Sephora or other makeup stores to find out what works best for you! Setting powders are an investment at times, but they also last a while before you need to buy a refill. Do you have a favorite setting powder that didn’t make this list? Drop it down in the comments!
