TPH by Taraji Hair Review and A Wash Day Routine

Beauty and lifestyle content is my primary focus, and I haven’t really taken too many opportunities to chat about what I do for my hair. That’s mainly because my hair is usually in a protective style for most of the year. (Hopefully that can change this summer.) Either way, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to share my thoughts on the recently launched skincare line TPH by Taraji P. Henson.

Last month I had the opportunity to meet Taraji and learn more about the line. She shared her own personal hair journey and gifted myself and other attendees some products to try. Here is my TPH by Taraji P. Henson Hair Review:

Never Salty Sugar Salt Scrub

What it is:

  • A scrub to balm exfoliant that lifts dead skin cells and buildup to detox your scalp and promote hair growth.

Pros:

  • The applicator. The two-prong applicator allowed me to use this scrub while I had my hair in cornrows under a wig. I can use this product any time.
  • The ingredients. The scrub is made with apple cider vinegar and peppermint oil, which are known to have clarifying effects.
  • The feel. The peppermint oil especially gave my scalp a refreshing, cooling feeling.

Cons:

  • The consistency. Because it’s a balm, this product is a little harder to push out that some of the others.
  • The feel. While the peppermint oil feels great on the scalp, I really wasn’t a fan of when it got onto the skin on my forehead and near my eyes.

Master Cleanse Scalp Treatment Wash

What it is:

  • A refreshing and rebalancing formula that helps dissolve scalp build up to provide a clean and balanced environment for healthier natural hair.

Pros:

  • The applicator. This one is smaller than the one for the “Never Salty” scrub, so it’s much easier to dig deep into your scalp.
  • The feel. Similar to the scrub. This product has ingredient that leave a cooling effect on your scalp (tea tree oil, eucalyptus oil, and witch hazel water.)

Cons:

  • The Consistency. This is a very liquidy consistency. This is great because it makes me feel like this product is truly a concoction of natural oils. But it is VERY easy for this product to trickle down into your eyes. I think this is the kind of product you take to the salon when you have someone tilting your head back into a sink keeping it from going into your eyes.

Mint Condition Tingling Scalp Conditioner

What it is:

  • A scalp moisturizer that is meant to return conditioning and moisture to your scalp after the master cleanse.

Pros

  • The concept. I know this is not a real “pro” of the product, but I appreciate the concept of a scalp conditioner (really a scalp moisturizer). The skin on your head is still skin, and so I really appreciate the fact that this product has hydrating ingredients like shea butter and aloe.
  • The usual. Same general pros as the scrub and scalp wash (applicator, ingredients, feel).

Cons:

  • None! The consistency of this product was just right.

Honey Fresh Clarifying Shampoo with Moisture

What it is:

  • A shampoo that works to clean hair without stripping it of natural oils. Nothing too special

Pros & Cons

  • The real. I’m neutral, nothing really stood out to me about this. I don’t think it enhanced my curls like the OGX Coconut Curls shampoo I normally use does, but this shampoo is made for all hair types so I wouldn’t expect it to. It smells good, it lathers well, nothing much else to say here.

Make it Rain Hydrating Conditioner

What it is:

  • A hydrating and strengthening conditioner that helps smooth, detangle, and nourish hair.

Pros & Cons:

  • The same. Like the shampoo, I’m more or less neutral about this product. Normally, I condition my hair with the Carol’s Daughter Restoring Conditioner which I feel enhances my curls and protects my hair, which is highly susceptible to damage. I will say though that once blow dried, my hair felt stronger and healthier, but not as soft or moisturized as usual. In this area, the conditioner left me wanting more.  I’ll have to do more experimenting to know for sure. I have a feeling that this conditioner works best when paired with other products in the line that I don’t have.

After Dark Overnight Repair Mask

What it is:

  • A melt-into-your-hair overnight mask that provides deep moisture and love to your locks. This mask helps to optimize vibrancy, fortify strands, and shield hair against future damage.

Pros:

  • The effect. I think I can say this is responsible for the added strength I saw in my hair once I blow dried it. In this way, it does exactly what it claims to do and I didn’t even have to use it the whole night. (I kept it on as a hair mask for about 5-10 minutes and then rinsed out.)

Cons:

  • The staying power. I needed to use A LOT of the product to make sure my hair was fully coated.

The Guardian Curl Refresher

What it is:

  •  A true hair refresher that also acts as a filter; helping your hair flourish despite exposure to humidity and other environmental elements. You can use it to refresh wash and go’s or other protective styles and protect against frizz.

Pros:

  • The scent. Works amazingly on wigs as well, which is what I used the product for. I used it primarily on my HerGivenHair unit and it did an amazing job of refreshing my curls. On top of that, the product smells AMAZING. I really loved using this.

Cons:

  • The concentration. If you have big hair, this product is going to get used up quickly. After a few days I had already gone through about half the bottle and it’s not as if I was drenching every single strand in the product. This could be a function of the spray bottle applicator which I feel like let the product out in a very concentrated way that made it hard to cover more areas of my hair at once.

Bottom Line & Takeaways:

  • My fave products: I would highly recommend the scalp products and throw in the curl refresher as a nice bonus as my favorite products out of the ones I tried. I definitely see myself incorporating these into my wash routine.
  • Products I could do without: The shampoo and conditioner didn’t blow me away, and I’d probably stick to the ones I already use since they work well for me.
  • Affordability: This line gets points for affordability for sure, especially considering how much product you get.
  • Curl friendly: Many of the products I tried don’t cater specifically to any hair type. Taraji mentioned that she would start of by launching products that would reach all hair types and then launch products targeted towards specific needs as time goes on. With the exception of the curl refresher, none of the products I tried specifically enhanced curls.
  • Products I’d want to try: Taraji said great things about the Real Love Protein Mask so out of all the products I didn’t try, this would be one I’d look into. TPH by Taraji P. Henson Hair Review
  • Bottom line: All in all I will say the best thing about this line is that my hair (and scalp!) was truly clean. That gives it major points in my book.

So, have you tried TPH by Taraji products yet? Which one of these products would you be most interesting in testing out?
