Don’t Believe The Hype: Makeup Items I Wish I Never Bought

I feel like there have been a number of items on my blog and youtube channel that I’ve given positive reviews of makeup products and tools , but the reality is I’m not in love with absolutely every item in my collection and sometimes brands are inconsistent with the quality and usefulness of their products. While there are definitely old faithful items that I constantly go back to, there are certainly some awful makeup items that I wish I never bought. Here’s the full list below:

Fenty Beauty Eyeshadow

There was certainly a lot of hype surrounded the Fenty Beauty launch in September 2017 and rightfully so. The brand launched with so many shades and undertones almost everyone could find their match. As time went on and the brand expanded their product range, I became increasingly excited to try some of their eyeshadows. If you haven’t heard me say it enough, or if you couldn’t tell for yourself, eyeshadow is my favorite part of any makeup look.

I now own two Fenty eyeshadow palettes: both the Galaxy Palette and the Moroccan Spice Palette. I can confidently say that although the packaging was superb, both of these palettes are EXTREMELY underwhelming. The Galaxy palette works best as a companion palette because the glitters are better used as toppers rather than shadows on their own. I’ve tried to give the Moroccan Spice palette a chance on multiple occasions but the shadows are truly not pigmented enough to give me anything other than a wash of color on the lids. Bottom line: I don’t think I’ll be spending my hard earned coined on Fenty shadows unless I hear that they’ve done something drastically different with their formula. They’ll still have me on their highlighters though because I believe that is hands down Fenty’s best product.

Becca Full Coverage Concealer

I’m a sucker for a good concealer. In a matter of months my concealer collection grew from about 2 to 14. I’ve definitely got my favorites but this Becca Full Coverage Concealer goes down as one of my least favorite concealers of all time. I never truly understood what creasing was until I used this concealer but trust and believe I probably won’t be using it again.  I tried pairing it with the full coverage foundation from Becca and it did not help improve the quality of the foundation. Yet another brand that is better off sticking to creating highlighters.

Huda Beauty Foundation

I had never tried any product from this brand but I was especially curious when I saw a section at my local Sephora. Since I’m always on the hunt for new foundations to add to my collection, I figured why not give the #FauxFilter Foundation a shot. I should have listened to other reviews when they said the fragrance was truly unbearable. I had to learn the hard way. It’s not a bad smell, in fact it could smell like a perfume. Nevertheless the scent, however good it may be, is simply too strong for me to place it on my face. On top of that, I heard their setting powders have the same scent which means this is clearly intentional. Even if the foundations and powders are amazing quality, there are just some things that I won’t be able to get past and the scent is one of them. I think I’ll be sticking to Huda Beauty Eyeshadows from now on.

Glossier Wowder

I definitely have plenty of setting powders in my collection that give me a #snatched and mattified look. When I made a purchase from glossier, I had my mind set on a lighter no makeup makeup setting powder. For me, the Wowder setting powder gives me a touch of gray ash on my skin and the packaging is not my favorite. I’d rather stick to using a small amount of some of my favorite setting powders or a pressed powder, instead of using this Glossier one.

CoulourPop No Filter Foundation Stix

I was beyond excited when I heard ColourPop was launching their No Filter Foundation Stix because it meant I could finally have a stick contour from the brand. I bought the foundation sticks in a foundation shade, highlight shade, and a contour shade. When I filmed a first impression and my review on the products, I learned immediately that the foundation stix applied really oily on my skin and even worse, it had an awful plastic smell. I’ve only used the foundation stix once since I filmed my initial review, and I don’t think I’ll be using them again. But best believe I’ll keep their liquid foundation, concealer, and setting powder in rotation because those products are truly bomb! Just check out this full face look I put together using all ColourPop!

Final Thoughts

While it may seem like there are plenty of items in my collection that I hate, there are tons more that I love. The lesson here is to try out products as soon as you can and don’t procrastinate when it comes to sending them back if you don’t like them. There’s no use in keeping around things that you don’t like!
